10 HOMEMADE HAIR MASKS RECIPES
You’re starting to know me : I’m a homemade beauty recipes enthusiast. Simple recipes only, whith things you probably already have in your house. Because after all, why spend 30€ for a hair mask full of chemicals, while with one egg and one avocado, you can obtain a better result ? From this perspective, I’m sure you’re dying to read my homemade hair masks recipes…
A dry and damaged hair needs to be deeply nourished. Even if a damaged hair can’t be fixed (it’s impossible to glue split ends or scales), we can however improve its aspect and keep it from getting drier. In order to do that, we need oily ingredients.
– Oil bath
The oil bath is a classic for your hair ! I strongly advise you to use coconut oil, which is – according to me – the best oil for a cosmetic use. Apply it on the totality of your hair – and on your scalp to make it grow faster ! the best oil, I told you -and leave it on for at least 2 hours, the whole night if you can. Wrap your head with a warm towel so that the oil can penetrate more easily into the scales.
You can also use olive, jojoba, almond oil…
I strongly advise you not to use a supermarket oil, like L’Oréal, : they often contain alcohol, which would damage and dry out the hair.
– Olive oil + Egg yolk
Mix an egg yolk and a few tbsp of olive oil, depending on the length and thickness of your hair.
The egg is a great ingredient for your homemade hair masks, in particular the yolk which is full of lipids : perfect to nourish your hair !
We tend to think that nourishing and hydrating mean the same thing, which is not exactly true. A dehydrated hair needs water, thing that the oily ingredients won’t bring. The best ingredients for that are the ones that will help the hair “catch” water and keep it.
– Aloe Vera
The aloe vera mask is great to hydrate your hair. Choose a natural aloe vera gel – be careful ! a lot of them contain alcohol, check the composition beforehand – and choose it organic if possible. Even better, if you have an aloe vera plant at home, cut a few leaves in half and get the pulp that’s inside. Apply it on the totality of your hair and leave it on for about two hours.
You can also use aloe vera gel as a conditioner, or you can apply a bit on your ends everyday, to style them and protect them.
– Honey + Banana
Mash a ripe banana and mix it with a few tbsp of honey. Leave it on your hair for approximately two hours.
This fruit is full of potassium, which is great to strengthen the hair. The honey is naturally hydrating and will keep your hair moisturized.
– Avocado + Yoghurt
Mash a ripe avocado and mix it with two tbsp of natural fat yoghurt (in this cas, light isn’t ideal). Leave it on as long as possible, at least for two hours.
Like the honey, the avocado will maintain the hydratation of your hair, helped by the yoghurt, full of proteins.
Mixed or oily hairs can also find homemade masks suitable for their needs, whith recipes that will nourish the dry lengths, while purifying the oily roots.
– Egg yolk + Grape seed oil
Mix an egg yolk with a few tbsp of grape seed oil, and apply this on your hair during one to two hours. The egg will nourrish the dry ends, while the grape seed oil will cleanse and purify the scalp.
– Green clay
This is a really efficient way to cleanse a greasy scalp ! Mix some green clay with a bit of water (I don’t know the exact quantities, but it will be written on your clay packaging). Leave it onfor about 30 to 45 minutes. Be careful not to apply the mask on the lengths if you don’t want to dry them out.
– White vinegar + Baking soda
Mix 3 tsp of baking soda with 3 tbsp of white vinegar, and massage this mixture onto your scalp and roots. Then, leave it for approximately 10 minutes.
The baking soda is going to purify your scalp, and the small grains will offer a good scrub that will help you get rid of dead skins and sebum build-ups (I hope you’re not eating right now). The white vinegar is going to purify your roots and keep them from getting oily too quickly. As a bonus, it will leave your hair shinier !
MAKE IT SHINE
For a shiny hair, no miracle ! You need a nourished, well hydrated hair. Try also to rince your conditioner with cold water : that will close the scales and give a shinier aspect to your hair.
– Honey + Lemon juice
Mix a few tbsp of honey with the juice of a lemon and leave it on for about one hour. As I previously said, honey is great to hydrate the hair. Regarding the lemon, it will help to close the scales of your hair and add a lot of shine. Be careful not to go under the sun for a few hours after you do this mask : the lemon is photosensitizer and could lighten your hair.
– Egg yolk + Cider vinegar
Mix an egg yolk – again ! – with two to three tbsp of cider vinegar. This is the perfect ingredient to make the dullest of hairs shine ! You can also use it as rince water, right after your shampoo and conditioner : put a few tbsp in one liter of warm water and finish to rince your hair with it.
