This summer hasn’t been my healthier one. Moving to Malta in May and launching this blog in July required a lot of time and energy, and I haven’t found the courage to workout as much as I usually do. My diet has also been more hazardous than usual : between busy days where your meal is the last thing in your mind and lots of dinners at the restaurant, I have been caught up in an unhealthy circle. I have therefore decided to make some changes to my lifestyle in order to start the fall with a healthy mind. I am sharing with you my tracks and ideas to detoxify your body.

DIET

When you want to have a healthier lifestyle, the first thing you need to reconsider is your diet.
I’va always had a quite healthy and balanced diet, especially these past 2 years, after I realised how important this was. Gleb and I usually eat organic food and we avoid the industrial one. When I lived in Rennes, I cooked a lot of super healthy meals. Unfortunately, since we moved to Malta, we have started to neglect our good habits : a poorly equiped kitchen, a tumultuous summer, a lack of time, the list goes on. But we have just started to find some organisation in our everyday life, and I am now able to go back to my healthy diet. My goals are the following (click on the arrows to learn more) :

Reducing my carbs intake
I love pasta in all its forms, but this isn’t good to eat too much carbohydrates. I am therefore going to reduce my comsumption of this kind of food.
Eating more vegetables
I already eat quite a lot of them (I often make salads), but I think I can do better. Veggies are a great source of vitamins, fibre and minerals, crucial in the context of a healthy lifestyle.

Finding the right breakfast
Most of the time, I don’t eat in the morning. If I’m really hungry, I will have what I find : a fruit, some whole grain bread, biscuits… I know that this behaviour is really bad for your health, because breakfast is supposed to be the most important meal of the day. I am currently looking for something balanced and easy to prepare, and I think I will go for oatmeal with almond milk and fruits. Any suggestion, maybe ?
Snacking smarter
I love salty food… but I also have a sweet tooth. It’s really hard for me to resist when there is chocolate or other industrial junk food near me. I noticed that replacing these aliments with healthy fruits works pretty good with me. The problem is that I tend to forget to eat the fruits, and they saddly end up rotten in my kitchen. I hate waste, and this doesn’t motivate me to buy other ones. I have to find a solution to think about eating them regularly. Any ideas ?

SLEEP

If I forget about some unusual sleep troubles these past few days, I usually sleep 8 hours per night. This is therefore not a real problem for me, but I still mention it for the people who might be concerned. Sleep is a real asset for a healthy lifestyle, and I really advise you to sleep as much as you can, 7 to 8 hours per night would be great. Our body cells regenerate when we sleep, and a good rythm brings a lot of advantages : better concentration, better digestion, healthy skin, hair and nails, less food cravings, the list goes on.

Sleep easily
If you have troubles to fall asleep, try to do some rituals before going to bed : turn off your electric devices, relax and take off your make up while listening to soft music, sip on an infusion while reading a book… But more important, be attentive to your body and go to bed as soon as you are feeling tired. If you fight, you will probably have to wait until the next cycle to fall asleep, a few hours later.

HYDRATATION

Last but not least, hydrating is the key of a healthy body. At the moment, I am trying to drink 2 to 3 liters of water a day. This is not  easy, and going to the bathroom every 30 minutes is not the funniest thing in the world, but this can really do wonders for you. At medium term, you are less tired, more productive, your signs of tiredness and your blemishes disappear, your hair is shinier and grows faster, the digestion is made easier and cravings go away. Really, it’s worth the try. And if this is too much, 1,5 liter per day will already be a great start.

What to drink, when ?
Two big glasses of fresh water first thing in the morning. You can add fresh lemon juice for the vitamin C and to help your digestion.
A glass 30 minutes before taking a shower or a bath, to lower blood pressure.
A big glass in the morning.
A big glass 30 minutes prior to each meal.
A big glass in the afternoon.
A big glass before going to bed.

Sporty habits

I’m not telling you anything new, working out is crucial to stay fit and to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I have always worked out, more or less depending the times, and I am really motivated to get back at it in an assiduously way.

Starting back Insanity (45 min x 6)
I had started this program with Gleb several months ago, but we stopped when we moved to Malta. We are planning on getting back at it as soon as possible. This training method is one of the most difficult you can find (that explains the name), but this is so effective ! It’s really hard to do the complete sessions at the beginning, but you feel so good at the end…
Insanity is based on Max Interval Training (the opposite of High Interval Training) : long phases of intense effort ponctuated by short phases of recovery. In this program, there are 6 sessions of 45 minutes each week. That’s quite a great start !

Doing Pilates every morning (30 min x 6)
I really love to start my day with a workout, I really feel great after. Unfortunately, I’m often missing the motivation for this and I rather tell myself “I will do it tonight”. Nevertheless, I am going to wipe out this bad habit and start everyday right with some Pilates exercises. I really love Cassey Ho’s videos : far from the simple breathing exercise ! With her, you are going to sweat : the moves are difficult, it burns, it’s long, you are sore the next day, but this is effective and this deeply develop the muscles.

Adapted skin and hair care

Taking care of yourself, your skin, your hair will enhance the benefits a healthy lifestyle can bring to your physical appearance. I’ve decided to pamper my skin and my hair more than before.

The skin
I have been following a new beauty routine for a douzen of days now, with a range of products from La Roche Posay. I will write a precise post about this, but the principle is simple : every morning and nights, I clean my face with a micellar water, then I wash it with a foaming gel, and I finish with a hydrating skincare.
I need to improve my bodycare : I scrub my skin a lot, but I rarely put body cream on, simply because I never think of it. Now, I keep a Body Shop body butter on my bed table and I try to apply it every night before sleeping.
The hair
I recently cut about 10 centimeters of my hair, and it felt good. It was indeed quite damaged. For the past 3 months, it has often been exposed to sun, pool and sea water. Now that I’m rid of my damaged lengths, I want to take good care of my hair to limit the futur damage. My goals : a mask with natural ingredients at least once a week, and trying to use organic products only.

I hope I will manage to keep these healthy habits, even if this is not going to be easy everyday.
I will keep you posted in a few weeks about the results I get.
