During the past two years, I went three times on vacation to Tenerife Sur, in the Canary Islands. Therefore, this is a place I know quite well, especially because my boyfriend used to travel there regularly before we even met. If you are also planning on going to Tenerife, my best addresses might be helpful to you !
I always stay in the neighbourhood of Los Cristianos, on the Costa Adeje, in the south of the island. Therefore, my recommendations will mainly target this area.
Where to eat in Tenerife ?
A great italian restaurant where I always go when I’m in Tenerife. The food is so good, the decor so pleasant, the service so nice and the prices so cheap that I just can’t miss it. Pasta, pizzas, salads, meat, fish… In last January, I really enjoyed their unforgettable pasta carbonara. Everything is perfectly cooked, with fresh products. And eating on a cool terrace near the sea is a pretty nice experience, right ?
– Sama Sama
This italian restaurant is situated next to the Piccolo, and my opinion is the exact same one : a really good place that serves delicious fresh pasta, pizzas, bruschettas… And once again, the prices are really affordable.
– El Cine
I have to warn you, this restaurant doesn’t look anything special (it looks like a tourist trap, actually), and it’s quite difficult to find. So I know, in that perspective, it’s not particularly tempting… But I really encourage you to go beyond your prejudices and try it, because the food is delicious. This is not a coincidence if you’ll have to wait 30 minutes before you can get a table ! This place serves mostly fish, ultra fresh, from the morning. Grilled octopus (a delight), fillets, cuttlefish, seafood… And cherry on the calamari, the prices are very cheap, like in most places in Tenerife.
– La Gran Paella Valenciana
A restaurant that is very similar to the one I was just talking about. At first glance, the place is not really tempting… But in reality, even if it’s not great gastronomy, the dishes are really good and copious, made with fresh ingredients, especially when it comes to fish. I really enjoyed their fish and chips ! But be careful, most of the time you will have to wait a bit because this place is also victim of its own success.
– The Oriental Monkey
This restaurant is more expensive than the ones stated above, but it’s worth the shot if you like asian food. First, when you enter the place, you might get astounded by the pretty decor, in a really dark wood, with gorgeous suspended lightings. Regarding the food, I must confess that I’m not crazy about sushis and that I went there to please the persons that were with me. However, I did enjoy my meal and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, which is really fresh and perfectly cooked. My boyfriend, who is much more of a sushi connoisseur than me, confirmed that he had found the food excellent.
– Hard Rock Café Tenerife
I went to this place for the first time last January. We were three, starving and dreaming about a great burger. Since we were very close to the Hard Rock Cafe at this moment, we decided to give it a try. If you know the chain, you already know that they think big when it comes to decor – fountains, big screens – and that the service is nice. Regarding my burger, it was a real delight, with a delicious cheese and a perfectly cooked meat. No room for dessert after that !
Where to go out in Tenerife ?
– Papagayo Beach Club
Sofas on the beach a few meters away from the waves, or with a view over the ocean, dance floor in the open… This nightclub is perfect if you want to go out in a stunning place. The prices are correct, with drinks much cheaper than what you can get in a french nightclub… And if you enjoy smoking, you can also order a chicha.
– In the same area, you will discover a lot of nice bars, with very attractive prices. I know that the employees in the streets who are asking you to come inside every ten meters can be a bit off-putting, but don’t hesitate to talk to them if you want to go in their bar, because they are sometimes able to get you a discount or a few free glasses, especially if you are a large group.
Where to go shopping in Tenerife ?
– Commercial center Safari
This commercial center in the open is very pleasant to shop at. You will find stores such as Zara, Nike, Stradivarius, but also luxury stores, beauty stores, jewellery stores. There, you will also find the asian restaurant The Oriental Monkey, which I was talking about earlier, as well as various bars. The Hard Rock Café restaurant, also mentioned above, is situated just across this shopping center.
– Commercial center Plaza Del Duque
A shopping center that is a bit more high-class, with mostly luxury stores. A shopaholic’s paradise !
– Siam Mall
This new shopping center opened recently. Apart from the fact that this place is nicely decorated, you will find a big Zara store, Oysho, Massimo Dutti, Mango… to name a few.
Where to relax in Tenerife ?
– Marylanza Suites & Spa
If you are looking for a place where you can relax, I really advise you to try the gorgeous spa of this hotel ! I went there a lot of times to use the gym or enjoy the spa area. Jacuzzi, sauna, hammam, pool with ice cold water, a small bath for the blood circulation in the legs, a salted pool with classical music… This truly is a great place, where you can relax and take care of yourself. The gym is also perfect, with a modern equipment : strength-building machines, treadmills, elipticals…
What to do in Tenerife ?
– Road trip in the Teide’s mountains
In Tenerife, I strongly advise you to rent a car, otherwise you will not be able to go everywhere you want. I don’t know much about bus services there because we always had a car at our disposal, but I don’t think this is the best mode of transportation to visit the island… Therefore, take advantage of your car to go on a road trip in the mountains ! The landscape is stunning.
– El Teide
If you visit the mountains, I also advise you to go higher, on the slopes of the volcano el Teide. A gorgeous scenery that deserves to be seen, with an impressive martian landscape. You can also take a cable-car to go up to the summit of the volcano.
– Jet ski and other nautical activities (Puerto de Los Gigantes)
During my first trip to Tenerife, we went for a jet ski ride, from the harbour of Los Gigantes. If I remember well, the price was 200€ the two hours, for four people (two jet skis). If you can afford it, this is a great experience, even if I have to admit that I was a little scared at first because the ocean was a bit rough.
I hope you will find this list of best addresses helpful during your stay in Tenerife !
