SUN PROTECTION : MY FAVOURITE PRODUCTS
After two weeks in France, goodbye rain and clouds, I’m back under the maltese sun ! And who says sun says sun protection. When I was younger, I didn’t pay a lot of attention to my sunscreen, and I used some only when I was on holiday somewhere, or during a really long exposure in the summertime. But since I’ve been living in Gozo, I never go out of the house without sun protection ! It’s important, of course to avoid skin cancer, but also premature aging…
With the warmer weather coming, I’ve decided to share with you the products I use on a daily basis.
I use sunscreen on my face and neck everyday. I chose the very high protection mineral cream from Avène (SPF 50+). It’s ideal for intolerant skins and it’s water resistant. I’m really happy with this product : even if it’s a bit thick and difficult to spread, it perfectly protects my skin and doesn’t leave any oily or stick residue. However, it will leave a white film on your face during a few minutes, until your skin absorbs all of the product. A small amount is enough for the face and neck.
On my lips, I use the vitamin E stick from The Body Shop with a SPF 15.
Usually, I use supermarket products, and I was really happy with the Garnier line for light and sensitive skins. That was until I borrowed my mom’s solar products and discovered the brand Aptonia, which is sold in the Decathlon sport stores in France. This is the best sun protection I’ve used so far ! No sickening smell, a practical spray format, and a product that penetrates the skin in the blink of an eye and that isn’t sticky at all ! I don’t know about you, but I hate it when sand sticks to my skin…
Last summer, I wasn’t used to the maltese sun yet, and I have neglected my hair protection. This, plus the sea and the pool water, and you get a hair in really bad shape. I won’t do the same mistake this year : I’m using the Orofluido spray, which has been tested in the Sahara desert (nothing less !). It smells like monoï and doesn’t leave your scalp oily.
Wearing braids and a hat is also a good way to protect your hair.
I rarely get sunburnt, but when that happens, I use aloe vera gel on the area. This product soothes the skin instantly ! However, try to use a 100% natural gel, and check if there isn’t any alcohol in it ! It would burn your skin and your problem would be worse…
If you’re lucky enough to have a few aloe vera plants in your garden, you can simply cut a leaf in half and directly use the liquid that’s inside.
I can only advise you to be careful under the sun, in order to avoid small
problems (sunburns or early wrinkles) and bigger ones (skin cancer).
Try to wear the right sun protection for your skin !
