GOZO IN A DAY OR IN A WEEKEND (WHAT TO SEE, IN WHICH ORDER, WITH WHICH BUSES ?)

gozo in a day, what sould I visit in Malta, visiting Gozo in a weekend, how to travel in Malta, bus schedules gozo

Most of the tourists who are going to the island of Gozo stay there only for a day, sometimes for a weekend. This might be your turn soon if you’re reading this right now. You’re probably wondering what you will manage to visit in a few hours ! What’s worth visiting ? In which order ? How to organize your visits depending on the bus schedules, and in order not to lose too much time ? I’m answering these questions right now !

I created three different programs :
– Gozo in a day, by bus.
– Gozo in a day, by car.
– Gozo in a weekend, by bus.

You can of course print these programs for your personal use.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

→ You can find all the detailed journeys on the Malta Public Transport website, in “Journey Planner” and “Google Your Journey”.
→ For the ferry schedules, all the info are on the Gozo Channel website !
The ferry is free from Malta to Gozo. For the other way round, it costs approximately 4€/person, and 15€ for a car + the driver.
The bus terminus is situated in the center of Victoria, the capital. This is where you might have to catch a connection if your area is not directly served. From that point, you can go everywhere you want in Gozo.
→ There’s approximately one bus every hour, from about 5am to 10:30pm. Sometimes, they may be a few minutes late or early, depending on the traffic, but they usually are on time.
→ The bus tickets in Gozo cost 1.00€ for two hours and 1.50€ for the whole day (more info here).
→ To rent a car in Mgarr, I advise you to look on Cheap Car Hire. The rental for a day will cost you approximately 50€. Think about booking a day in advance, to be sure.
→ Do you need a taxi, a car, a mini-bus in Gozo ? Contact Mario’s Rent a Car.
→ For the best restaurants, check this post.

GOZO IN A DAY – BUS

With this program, you can see and visit the most important places of the island.

The planning is a bit tight, but if you want to do everything in a day, there’s no other choice… I really optimized the whole thing, in order for you to spend the less time possible in the bus, and to avoid too many changes and connections in Victoria.
You’re free to skip a visit if you’re not interested in something, that will leave you more time on the other sites.

Also know that the two last ferries to go back to Malta leave at 9:45pm and 11:15pm from Mgarr. You can therefore stay longer in Gozo during the evening. Be careful, though ! Check if you will have a bus available in Malta to go back to your hotel/location. Usually, the buses stop moving quite early at night. In this case, you will have to take a taxi !

GOZO IN A DAY – CAR

With a car, you will be freer and you will be able to visit more areas, because you will spend less time on the roads. And if you don’t like it somewhere, you can always leave ! But try not to lose yourself… take a map with you !

The island is 14km wide and 7km long, so you are rarely more than 10 minutes away from your next destination. I didn’t create a planning, sctriclty speaking, because you’re free to choose your own schedule, but I would call that a guide to show you the places to visit, in a practical order.

If this schedule looks too tight to you, I advise you to skip the visit of Qala and Hondoq Bay.

GOZO IN A WEEKEND – BUS

Finally, I am sharing a third planning, made for two whole days this time ! This is still too short to see everything, but after this weekend, you will be able to say that you’ve seen the most beautiful of Gozo !

If you want to go out at night, I advise you to try la Grotta, the biggest nightclub of the island, which is among the most beautiful of Europe. As its name suggests, it is situated in an old (and huge) cave that’s partially in open air, with a view over the cliffs. You will find this nightclub on the road to Xlendi.
If you prefer bars and pubs, you will find some good ones in Marsalforn, or in Victoria.
If you are staying on the east cost, the village of Qala has two really nice bars (the Stoneage and the Zeppi’s).

If this program looks too tight to you, I advise you to skip Qala and/or Xlendi.
